My mom always said to hold my scissors with the blade in my hand, just so if I fall I don't put them through my eye. I don't know what the full situation is for this barber, but it doesn't seem like he followed that advice.

Max Cohen was getting his haircut by 29-year-old Steve Silva at Boston Barber & Tattoo Co.

“He was walking around the back of the chair and all of a sudden he’s on the floor. I look down and I see blood. He says ‘oh my God, I stabbed myself’ and pulls a set of scissors out of his chest,” Cohen said.

“I figured as long as he stayed calm it would probably be the best situation,” said Cohen. He's seen on the surveillance videos grabbing something to compress the wounds while they waited for first responders.

“I’m really proud about how they handled the situation,” said Dello Russo, the owner of Boston Barber & Tattoo Co.

Russo explained that with closures during the pandemic, he had to lay off some employees. He says Silva is one of his best employees, and one of few left on the payroll.

“A lot of my staff, I had to lay them off. They were collecting. I tried to bring them back, trying to muster up some business, trying to keep them going. This was Steve’s first week back at work, and now this. So he’s in a jam,” Dello Russo said.

GoFundMe page has been set up to help him with his medical bills.
