Get ready for some fun new additions at Adventureland in Altoona this summer! A new article from the Des Moines Register outlined some of the big changes that are coming in 2023.

Last August, Adventureland revealed that two new thrill rides would be arriving at the park this year. The Flying Viking will be the park's 7th rollercoaster and is described as "family-friendly." According to Adventureland's website:

"The coaster reaches speeds of up to 26 miles per hour and climbs to heights of up to 50 feet! Be ready for the twists, turns, and drops that await. "

Another cool feature of The Flying Viking is that it will be woven together with the other new ride Draken Falls. Draken Falls is a new log ride that will be similar to the one that was removed from the park back in 2015. The website says that "the ride will end with the same 40 foot drop, but will also include an aerial panoramic turnaround and an airtime hill."

In addition to the new rides this summer, Adventureland guests can also expect a couple of new food options. One is a Viking-themed French fry stand called Potato Patch, which serves fresh-cut fries with a variety of toppings. Potato Patch is a very popular food stand at Adventureland's sister park in Pittsburgh called Kennywood. It's so popular, in fact, that it's celebrating its 50 year anniversary this summer!

The other new food option is a little bit sweeter. The Sweet Boutique will be moving in on Main Street and will offer candy and other sweet treats. Based on the artist rendering, it will be hard to miss!

As far as other park improvements go, you'll notice that the Space Shot has gotten a red, white, and blue makeover, and Frantic Freeway, the bumper car ride, is now red and white instead of gray and green.

For guests who hate waiting in long lines, Adventureland will now offer a "Speedy Pass" for seven of the park's most popular rides:

  • Draken Falls
  • Flying Viking
  • Monster
  • Phoenix
  • Sidewinder
  • Saw Mill Splash
  • Underground

Adventureland's website says that guests will be able to use their phones to scan a QR code to purchase different Speedy Pass options. The pass can reportedly cut the wait time up to 90%.

Adventureland is set to open for the 2023 season on Saturday, May 6th, but won't be open seven days a week until the month of June. According to the Des Moines Register, The Flying Viking and Draken Falls should hopefully be open sometime in late May.
