A man from China was busted in Sri Lanka trying to smuggle live 200 scorpions through the Bandaranaike International Airport.

The traveler was detained and charged with a fine of 100,000 rupees (about $550) before being allowed to continue on his flight back to China. Sri Lankan officials noticed the scorpions coming through security when the bags were scanned. The animals were all contained, kept in plastic bags.

The head of customs said they are still trying to pin down the street price of wholesale live scorpions, but the smuggling of wildlife is a growing problem, and a "lucrative trade."

The Bandaranaike International Airport has had problems with people smuggling things through in strange manner in the past. At the same airport in 2017, a man tried to sneak through 2lbs of gold, valued at $30,000, in his ass.
