35 years ago today in 1980 John Lennon was shot and killed outside his New York City apartment building, The Dakota. Mark David Chapman, a former mental patient who had earlier that day asked for and received Lennon's autograph.

Chapman has been eligible for parole several times and has been denied every time. "I am sorry for causing that type of pain," Chapman told the parole board in 2014. "I am sorry for being such an idiot and choosing the wrong way for glory."

John was pronounced dead on arrival at Roosevelt Hospital. Doctors still tried to save him for 20 minutes. Howard Coswell broke the news of Lennon's death to the nation on Monday Night Football during the Dolphins-Patriots game:

The area surrounding The Dakota was swarmed with mourning fans for days. Lennon did not have a funeral. Instead, Yoko Ono requested a 10-minute moment of silence Dec. 14, 1980.
