The whole practice of pole vaulting always appears to defy the laws of physics. Basically, a large and muscular person runs really, really fast with a long pole and eventually gains enough speed to put one end of the pole down and catapult his or her body up and over a bar. But every so often the pole does exactly what we always expect it to do: it breaks.
