To My Daughter on Her 17th Birthday

Tomorrow Katie turns 17.   17.   17.

The number echoes in my head as this milestone birthday hits me like a hammer.   I could never have imagined feeling this way about another person.  But I will try to explain it in the following letter:

Katie,

I am so proud of the young woman you have become.  And so scared of the paths you have yet to ride.  It's a natural worry for every father.  But you have shown me what hard work and dedication can produce.  Watching you grow up has truly been my pleasure, and I can't wait for the next adventure you take me to.

Whatever joy I may have given you, God has multiplied it tenfold in trusting me with your care.  It is my honor to be the first man in your life to show you kindness and love.  I know there will be others, but it's always been you and me, and always will be.  I love you.
