The International Pole Sports Federation has been around for about eight years now and has recently reached "observer status" by the Global Association of International Sports Federation.

That means the IPSF can apply for the Olympics and pole dancing groups can apply to be officially recognized as a sport. “We’re proving everybody wrong,” ISPF president Katie Coates said. “I’ve been told again and again by the traditional sports that it will be very difficult for us to be recognized as a sport, but that just spurs me on to achieve what they all say is impossible.”

Along with pole dancing, other lesser-known sports that are now observer status include: arm wrestling, dodgeball, and foosball.
