64-year-old Army vet Mike Hicks broke his back in an accident about a year-and-a-half ago. He's paralyzed from the waist down and has been in a wheelchair since.

He was in Hawaii last week with his wife, and wanted to dip his feet in the ocean. Hizson Keali'I, a local lifeguard, offered to help him out. He found Mike a beach wheelchair to get across the sand, pushed him down to the water, and Mike got to dip his feet in.

Then he met up with them again last Wednesday, brought a stand-up paddleboard, and took Mike surfing. Technically it was more like boogie boarding. You can see Mike in the photos lying on the board and catching a wave with a huge smile on his face.

Mike told the Huffington Post an interview that it was "a fantastic feeling of speed and freedom," and continued by calling it, "something I never thought I would ever feel again."
