Violating Iowa’s Leaf Law Could Result In A $1000 Fine
It's that beautiful time of the year again where the leaves change and the temps cool. I usually just rake my leaves into a pile since I have a small tree. Others struggle more with thousands of leaves. If you try to dispose of them the wrong way... you could see a decent fine.
In the state of Iowa is you don't put your leaves in a brown paper bag and purchase a sticker from the city that states the bag is full of leaves and must be recycled you could be facing a fine. Some are as low as $10 others hit the hundreds to thousands
Places like West Burlington are what let my title say "$1,000"
The fine for the first violation is $500, and the fine for subsequent violations is $1,000
Tiffin is also high.
The fine for violating yard waste collection site rules can be up to $750
The Laws
It appears that on average you will see a $100 to $250 fine at max. Some cities are super lower while others, as seen above, are very high. It is also reported that different arrears can have higher or lower fines.
For instance, Clinton is a bit lower.
Any violation of this code not listed shall carry a scheduled fine/civil penalty of $100 for a first offense.
There was also an appeal from the Iowa District Court for Linn County to set the cost at $75, but it still seems like the most steep you'll find a fine in Iowa is $250. Not to bad compared to Minnesota's law that has it at $1,000
Remember... YES! In the state of Iowa it is illegal to dispose of leaves into the landfil. After raking your leaves you must put them in a brown paper bag and purchase a sticker from the city that states the bag is full of leaves and must be recycled.
