Winter is just getting started.  There is still plenty of winter weather left for us to shiver and shovel.  Or, is that what we'll be getting for the rest of 2025?

For Illinois, the forecast can be very different from the top to the tip. In the case of this year's Farmer's Almanac, you could be in one of three zones to make your winter good, bad, or ugly.

Before radar and computers, Farmer's Almanac was using nature to figure out nature.

Robert B. Thomas, a schoolteacher and bookbinder, published the first Old Farmer's Almanac in 1792.

The almanac's popularity was due to the accurate weather predictions based on his study of solar activity, astronomy cycles, and weather patterns. Thomas' secret forecasting formula is still used today.

Illinois is split into three regions and each has its own prediction.

The Ohio Valley Region covers southern Illinois.

The Farmer's Almanac says winter will be colder than normal, especially in February where temps will be 4 degrees below average.  While temps will be below normal, they will also get above normal snowfall for winter 2025.

The Lower Lakes region of Illinois covers from St. Louis to Chicago and all of central Illinois.

This is the largest region of Illinois.  For this group, you can expect warmer than normal temps this winter.  And you'll be getting less snow.  So if you are not a fan of a "normal" winter, this is the best Illinois region for 2025.

The overall region is quite large in the Midwest.  But it's the smallest area of Illinois covering just a small sliver of Western Illinois from St. Louis to Wisconsin.

The Farmer's Almanac says winter will be warmer than normal in this area with the coldest periods happening in late January and early and late February.  When it comes to snow the almanac predicts snowfall will be below normal.

With this being such a large area of the Midwest you really need the full map to see a closer look at where you live.  Like for those of us in the Quad Cities, you can expect mild temps and snowy conditions.  So get ready to sweat while shoveling.

You can check the full forecast at The Farmer's Almanac.

Essential Winter Emergency Kit Items

Winter season in the Quad Cities means cold temperatures, heavy snow, and slick roads. Hopefully, you won't ever need to tap into your winter emergency kit, but it's better to have one in your car than to be unprepared. Make sure you have these essential items in your car before winter arrives in the Quad Cities.
