Think You’re Funny? Illinois Has Now Banned These Ridiculous Vanity Plates
If you live in Illinois, you won't be getting these vanity license plates.
Vanity license plates are an interesting thing. If you have enough confidence in your comedic and linguistic ability to make whatever you want to say into just 7 characters, and are willing to pay extra money to convey that skill, vanity plates are for you. Personally, I don't care what's on my license plate, it's just a thing. Often at stop lights I'm behind a car that's trying to be catchy with their vanity plate and I'll spend the duration of the stop light trying to decipher what exactly they meant to say.
Illinois Has Announced The Vanity License Plates That Will Be Banned
According to WQAD, Illinois has announced several vanity plate phrases that they will not allow. None of them are original in the slightest but don't apply for them if you really want a vanity plate.
For a standard vanity plate in Illinois, your initial purchase price is $245, with an annual renewal of $164. If you really want to be funny and display how funny you are, you're gonna pay extra for that.
Last year, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias says that nearly 400 requests for vanity plates were rejected in Illinois because of their "tawdry, lewd or offensive nature" or because they were difficult to read.
Secretary Giannoulias said:
We love the creativity and pride Illinoisans take in choosing their personalized license plates. Most plate requests are approved, but a small percentage fail to meet the standards of good taste and decency and are rejected because they violate the state’s vehicle code.
So basically, Illinoisians, don't be crass.
