More Sonic Drive-Ins Could Be Coming To Eastern Iowa
Crushed ice and fast food fans in eastern Iowa, Sonic Drive-In has some news for you.
Nik Bhakta, who owns more than 100 Sonic Drive-Ins, told The Gazette, that he hopes to open 10 locations in Eastern Iowa. They will be in Iowa City, Davenport, and Des Moines. If all goes to plan the first ones should open by the end of the year. Iowa City and Coralville are expected to get three or four of the 10 new locations. It's not been announced where a new one would go in Davenport.
Honestly, this is joyous to me. I'm from Arkansas and for whatever reason, bringing someone a Sonic drink with that crushed ice is how to say "I love you" in Arkansan. Why is that? I haven't a clue. But it's the gospel truth. My hometown isn't huge but we have nine Sonics. The Davenport Sonic knows me, my car, and my affinity for Diet Coke really well.
Besides the 10 possible Sonic Drive-In locations, more could pop up with an expansion into Ames and smaller towns that are close to I-80, like Oskaloosa and Ottumwa.
Bhakta told The Gazette:
Ideally, we are looking to develop one close to the mall, one close to the University (of Iowa) and one on the far southeast side. Additionally, we may look at North Liberty as that area grows.
The Gazette reports that Sonic's model has become more attractive to developers since it's all drive-in and we saw how the pandemic impacted normal restaurants that have indoor dining rooms.
