Latest Illinois Plant Closures Result In Nearly 1,500 Layoffs
There are a bunch of layoffs this summer.
Earlier this month, the Momence Packing Company in Kankakee County (owned by sausage company Johnsonville) announced it's closure, which resulted in nearly 300 people being without a job.
Now, data obtained by NBC Chicago from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, layoffs will happen in multiple places over the summer, which is known because of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (requires companies with 75 employees or more to provide 60-days notice for planned layoffs).
Next up: Career Builder + Monster Worldwide (a merger between the two employee recruitment companies) is planning to shutter their headquarters in Chicago's Loop, which will layoff nearly 400 workers by August 4th.
Electronics company Ametek Inc. has a location in St. Charles that will layoff 167 workers.
Bristol Myers Squibb is going to close a viral vector production facility in Libertyville that will bring about 133 layoffs.
Cleveland Cliffs, a steelmaker, will close 3 locations (two in Pennsylvania and one in Riverdale), resulting in nearly 300 people losing their jobs.
Carle Health in Champaign will layoff a total of 612 people.
And lastly, as of now, Oak View Group at McCormick Place will layoff 203 employees, citing "the cancellation of a venue management contract".
By the end of the summer, according to the Peoria Journal-Star, 14 Illinois businesses will have laid off nearly 2,100 employees.
