A very popular store that was many people's go-to place for crafts, fabrics, and art supplies is now closing one of its locations in Iowa after filing for bankruptcy.

Popular Retail Chains Closing In 2025

It feels very doom and gloom for big box stores as we turn the calendar to 2025. Throughout last year, there were so many places that filed for bankruptcy and said they would be closing down some, if not all of their stores. Retail stores announcing closures in 2025 included:

  • Kohl's
  • Party City
  • Advanced Auto Parts
  • Macy's

This list goes on and on.

With inflation taking so much money out of people's pockets, it's hard for customers to want to shop for items they don't necessarily need or that simply help with a hobby.

Experts with Investopedia say that inflation is on the decline but still above the Federal Reserve's goal. The November report shows inflation at 2.44%, while the Fed's goal is to have it at 2% or below.

Fabric Store Chain Files Bankruptcy, Announces Closures

My wife likes to sew and she learned that from her grandma and mom. When we do crafting for or with the kids, we primarily shop at Hobby Lobby or Michaels on Sundays.

I don't think I've ever stepped into this store, which is closing one Iowa location following filing for bankruptcy.

CBS News reported that JoAnn filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2024. The retail chain said it plans to keep its 800-plus stores open while it works through the restructuring process. Now we know that's not the case.

The only location closing in Iowa is 3200 Agency St. in Burlington. Store manager Barbara Boyles told The Hawk Eye that she and her staff found out the store would be one of several across the U.S. closing on Oct. 31st.

JoAnn's closing day in Burlington is approaching. The store's final day of operation is January 19th.

No Illinois stores will be closing. JoAnn still has other locations in Iowa, including in Muscatine, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, and on W Kimberly Road in Davenport.

Many people travel at the end of the year for the holidays or to use up vacation days that may expire. These countries have a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory issued on them by the U.S. Government and should be avoided.
