Iowa, These Are The 10 Commandments Of School Car Rider Line
If you've had to drop off or pick up kids at school in Iowa, you know it can be a mess.
Not long ago, I went with my bestie to surprise her kindergarten daughters by picking them up in the car rider line after school with snacks. (Aunt Sarah must always bring cinnamon rolls.) The car rider line shouldn't be a difficult thing for parents to navigate but even in the passenger seat I saw several ridiculous things that my bestie says are normal occurrences and clearly they need to stop.
Since we're off to a brand new school year, my bestie and I think it's a good idea to review some car rider line etiquette.
1. Thou Shalt Keep The Line Moving
This isn't the time to chat with the teachers, parents, or even get out of your car to do it.
2. Thou Shalt Stay Off Thine Phone
There are kids everywhere and, as referenced above, don't get distracted. Keep it moving.
3. Thou Shalt Not Cut The Line
This happened to my bestie. It won't kill you to wait your turn.
4. Thou Shalt Chill The Heck Out
Obviously it's frustrating when someone is double parked, clogging up the line, or otherwise acting like they're the only parent in the world. But you're setting an example for your kid and also that rage isn't going to get you through the line any faster.
5. Thou Shalt Not Flex Thine Car
Having something like a fancy Escalade, Rolls, or a Jag doesn't entitle you to anything in the school car rider line. You're still going to wait your turn behind the Corolla, champ.
6. Thou Shalt Be Ready
Don't wait until you're the one at the front to get your crap in line. If it's drop-off, make sure your kid has whatever they need right then. If it's pick-up, make sure your backseat is clear enough for your little to hop in. I saw one person who ran get in, buckle up drills with her kids before school started so they knew to be efficient and quick in the car line.
7. Thou Shalt Not Become A Racer
It's still a school zone and there's still kids around. Don't speed when you're entering or leaving the car line.
8. Thou Shalt Pull Up
Pull up as far as you can at the front of the car line to let as many cars in behind you as possible. Don't stop like 3 car lengths back.
9. Thou Shalt Not Act Entitled
But you're running late, you're in a hurry, you just need to drop the kid off real fast. Honey, all of us are in that boat. Take a number.
10. Thou Shalt Be Polite
Overall, just calm down (remember everyone hates sitting in car line) and don't get a sassy attitude with anyone trying to help move the line along.
