Early 80’s Hit Referenced on Iowa Dot Sign

Someone at the Iowa Department of Transportation came up with a genius way to get people to pay attention to their message. They referenced Tommy Tutone's big hit "8675-309/Jenny" in a sign urging motorists not to text and drive.

The sign reads "262 traffic deaths this year. Jenny-I've got your number, but I'll wait to text." I know if I saw that sign it would make me smile. It might also make me think twice before picking up my phone to see whose texting me while I'm driving.

If that doesn't get you to think about putting the phone down, the Iowa Department of Transportation laid these facts out with their picture on Facebook:

• Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of a football field blind.
• Driving while using a cell phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent.
• Drivers are four times more likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves while driving distracted.
