Not many children these days are thinking about helping others when it comes time for their birthdays. That's not the case for 5-year-old Dalton Shaw from Savanna, Illinois. Dalton celebrated his birthday this past weekend by asking his guests to bring supplies for area rescue dogs and cats at local shelters, and as you can see below his guests didn't disappoint.

"Dalton sure has a huge heart for animals." Dalton's mother, Stephanie Shaw, told me this morning. "He makes me want to be a better person myself."

This isn't the first time Dalton's family has given to area shelters. In the past they've also donated blankets and towels to animals in need.

She said that because the boy had received a lot of toys and presents for Christmas, she suggested they do something a little different for his birthday and give back. That's when the 5-year-old said he wanted to help the animals.

Dalton not only collected large amounts of food for the animals, he also received about $255 in donations for the shelters -- something his mother said he was ecstatic about.

"The response was overwhelming," Shaw said. "I had expected a little bag of treats from people here and there."
