America has some very expensive places to live. It also has some really nice cheap places to live, especially compared to the rest of the world.

A new study ranked 406 different cities around the world based on how affordable they are. They only looked at cities in first world countries for the study.

Four of the 10 most expensive are in the United States, but so are eight of the 10 least expensive.

The most affordable places in the world are:

  1. Racine, Wisconsin
  2. Bay City, Michigan
  3. Decatur, Illinois
  4. Elmira, New York
  5. East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania
  6. Karratha, Australia
  7. Lima, Ohio
  8. Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada
  9. Peoria, Illinois
  10. Rockford, Illinois

The most expensive places in the world are:

  1. Hong Kong, China
  2. Sydney, Australia
  3. Vancouver, British Columbia
  4. Auckland, New Zealand
  5. San Jose, California
  6. Melbourne, Australia
  7. Honolulu, Hawaii
  8. Los Angeles, California
  9. San Francisco, California
  10. Bournemouth and Dorset, England
