You've probably heard some of these before and how you're supposed to look out for them on a date. But they also apply in other situations, like when you're at work.

Here are some subtle signs you're making someone uncomfortable:

  1. They touch or rub anywhere on their neck. There are a lot of nerve endings in your neck, studies have shown that touching it reduces your heart rate and blood pressure. We do it subconsciously when we're stressed out.
  2. They avoid eye contact. That doesn't mean they should always be looking at you. Too much eye contact can actually be a sign that they're trying to hide how uncomfortable they are.
  3. Their feet are pointed away from you. We do it subconsciously when we're uncomfortable with someone. Most people can force a smile or maintain eye contact if they try to. But we don't usually think about what our feet are doing.
  4. Withdrawing or blocking. Meaning they might adjust their chair so they're not quite facing you. Or they might put a barrier between the two of you by crossing their arms or legs, or standing behind something, like a table.

Keep in mind that you might not be the reason they're uncomfortable though. They could just be stressed out about something that has nothing to do with you.
