Researchers have taken a look at discipline in schools across the United States. Compiling together their data, they created a Discipline Score for each state and ranked them based on that.

StartClass used six different metrics to get their scores:

  • Percent of students arrested.
  • Percent of students referred to law enforcement.
  • Percent of students expelled.
  • Percent of students with one or more out-of-school suspensions.
  • Percent of students with one or more in-school suspensions.
  • Percent of students put in seclusion.

The scores range from 0 to 6, with 6 indicating disciplinary problems. Here are the Top Ten states with their Discipline Scores:

  1. Illinois – Discipline Score: 4.56
  2. Missouri – Discipline Score: 4.48
  3. South Carolina – Discipline Score: 4.48
  4. Kansas – Discipline Score: 4.16
  5. Indiana – Discipline Score: 4.14
  6. Montana – Discipline Score: 4.1
  7. Connecticut – Discipline Score: 4.08
  8. Mississippi – Discipline Score: 4.04
  9. Oklahoma – Discipline Score: 4.02
  10. New Mexico – Discipline Score: 3.74

Iowa ranked in at #37 with a Discipline Score of 2.66.
