Officer Matthew Hickey of Marietta, Ohio retired from the force last week after 34 years of service. For the past four years he's been working with a police dog named Ajax, and Matthew wanted to adopt him when he retired.

Ajax hasn't reached retirement age, he's only five and could be a police dog for another five years. State law says that since they've put so much money into training him, they have to auction him off to the highest bidder.

The good news is, someone posted the story on GoFundMe.com last Thursday. And on day one, they raised about $18,000 to help Matthew win the auction. The city was expecting Ajax to go for about $3,500, and the GoFundMe page is now over 55 grand. So winning the auction shouldn't be a problem.

Any money Matthew has left over is going to charity, to buy bulletproof vests for other K-9 units around the country.
