Saturday Morning was a big day for the Freedom Home Ministry's Home for Homeless Veterans. It's a project that began with the donation of a Davenport home that had previously been used as 10 efficiency apartments, but had been vacant for about 10 years. Saturday was the day that the windows (60 of them) would be removed and replaced by volunteers.

Each person that showed up had an assignment waiting for them: Help out where you can. And that was it. If you were a skilled window installer, you picked a room and started tearing out windows, and installing new. If you were anyone else, you carried. And carried. Old windows, new windows, screws, caulk, packaging, old unusable trim pieces, all had a place to be, and everyone pitched in to get all the stuff where it needed to be. At times it seemed like a bucket brigade, at other times it must have looked like a life-sized ant hill. So many volunteers (about 100 throughout the day, in my estimation) moving at once could get confusing at times, but everyone had one goal that kept it humming. That goal: Give these Vets a place to call home. I am proud to be part of it, and prouder still that so many others who were there wanted nothing in return. We all were doing what we could. Kids, Adults, Seniors, Neighbors, Bikers, Laborers, Business Leaders, all pitching in.

The following pictures from Angie at Freedom Homes capture some of the effort, and the positive vibe that surrounded the day. The force is strong in this group. I hope to work with them all again soon!
