Last Tuesday Michael Kessler used a chemical to try and kill a bed bug infestation. When he saw a bed bug later in the day he tried to burn it, catching his bedding on fire.

The chemical that Kessler had used acted as an accelerant and worsened the fire which eventually spread throughout the house. Kessler was able to escape but went back inside to try to save his pets and he didn't make it back out.

“Always have two exits out of a room. In this particular case, this front door on the other side of the porch here, that was sealed shut and so he didn't have the opportunity to exit that way if he had chosen to do so. He was found near that door but not right up against it. We believe he was trying to retrieve animals,” said fire marshal Kevin Fox.
