Instead, they're launching a yearlong program where they'll plant a tree for every bag of coffee they sell at their stores.

Which is nice, but doesn't help you get free coffee. So here are a couple chains that are giving away coffee.

You can get a free small coffee and a glazed donut at Krispy Kreme if you mention the promotion, participating Dunkin' Donuts will give you a free medium or iced coffee if you ask for it.

Whole Foods stores are selling 12-ounce cups of coffee for 25 cents, Staples is running a promotion where you can win a Keurig and a bunch of other stuff if you tweet a photo of your favorite coffee mug with the hashtag #OfficeMugShot.

McDonald's is mostly ignoring National Coffee Day this year. A few locations in Connecticut and Massachusetts are giving out small cups, but it's not clear if they're doing it anywhere else.

Make sure to stop by our local coffee shops. Cool Beanz Coffeehouse, Milltown Coffee, Theo's Java Club, and RedBand Coffee Company to name a few.
