It's a trend that's not new, but it has finally crept it's way into our house, now that my teenagers are going to dances.  When I was in High School and you wanted to ask a girl to a dance, you just got your courage up, and laid it out there.  Your only concern was trying to hit that perfect moment between her desperation, and someone cooler than you pulling the trigger and asking her first...At least that's how it played out on my head.  I never was much for dances in High School, and only went to one that I was invited to.

This expectation that the invitation be some sort of event in-and-of itself puts an undue pressure on the kids.  And it takes the emphasis off the dance as well.  If I had to have that kind of firepower handy, I'd still be single living in my mom's basement.
