Lanam was a Korean War Veteran, he never married, had no children, and outlived his relatives. Word spread fast, "No veteran should go to the grave by himself," said Jeff Hauser. "When I got here we pulled in and saw literally hundreds of cars. My heart just went, 'Wow." I mean look at this."

At least 80 Veterans from the VFW and American Legion helped organize a proper burial for Charles with full military honors. Members of the Patriot Guard were on hand to form a barricade for the procession.

"People say patriotism is dead all you had to do was witness today and how the community came together to love one man," said Vince Frederick with the Knights of Columbus. "It's going to make you proud to be an Iowan. It's going to make you proud of your nation that people do come together and they do the right thing when asked."
