Overnight a gunman opened fire at a "college country night" at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California killing at least a dozen people.

Reports say that hundreds of people were inside the Borderline Bar & Grill when the gunman, wearing all black, started shooting around 11:20 P.M. local time. Deputies and highway patrolmen responded within minutes of receiving the shots fired calls.

Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus was shot multiple times and died at a local hospital. The veteran of 29 years had planned to retire soon.

Witnesses say that a tall man with a hood and partial concealed face first shot a bouncer, then used smoke bombs and opened fire on the bar. Police say the shooter was found dead in the bar and its unclear how he died.
