My wife and I both have iPhones and just recently noticed something odd happening in our Calendar app. Spam was showing up... in our calendars... is nothing sacred any more?

You might be familiar with notifications that look like this:

Apple
Apple
loading...

They're coming from Chinese-based scammers and they work by exploiting a flaw in Apple's notifications. The scammers send a false event invite that will automatically add itself into your Calendar.

From there, if you interact with the invite in anyway they'll know they have a live one. That means the spam will increase to your account.

Here's the work around:

  1. Go to your iCloud Calendar page via a desktop browser. Using your phone's browser won't work.
  2. Click the gear icon in the lower-left corner.
  3. Select Preferences.
  4. Click the Advanced icon.
  5. In the Invitations section, change the option from In-App Notifications to Email to iCloud Address.

Now the invites will only appear in your emails inbox and hopefully will even be filtered into the spam folder.
