Four New Sports Are Coming to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

The 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo, Japan will bring the return of baseball and softball after a 12-year absence. Members of the International Olympic Committee also voted in four other sports.

The new sports (skateboarding, surfing, karate and sport climbing) will add 18 events to the games with 474 new athletes. The Tokyo Olympics will feature a total of 33 sports wiht nearly 11,000 competitors.

New IOC rules allow host cities to propose additional sports. Tokyo's new games are called a mix of traditional and youth-oriented events.

"Taken together, the five sports are an innovative combination of established and emerging, youth-focused events that are popular in Japan and will add to the legacy of the Tokyo Games," IOC President Thomas Bach said.
