By now we've seen many superstars take the stage at the Super Bowl, further solidifying their status among the elite performers in music. But there may be no more memorable performance at a Super Bowl than when Prince took the stage in 2007 in Miami at Super Bowl XLI. On this day where we're mourning the death of the legend, let's reflect by taking a look at one of his more unforgettable performances.

As you may remember, Prince not only performed some of his biggest hits for the rain-soaked crowd, but also delivered incredible performances of other people's songs for his set. One of the songs that stood out during the set was Prince working in a bit of Foo Fighters' "Best of You."

Foo Fighters covered Prince's "Darling Nikki" a few years earlier, but while it did earn some radio attention, ultimately Prince declined to let the band release it in the U.S. “I heard that he didn’t like our version. Or maybe he just didn’t like us doing it,” drummer Taylor Hawkins told MTV in 2007.

He admitted the performance caught him by surprise, adding, “Dude, I have no idea why he did it, but I’d love to find out,” Hawkins laughed. “I mean, the thought went through my head that maybe he was doing it as a sort of ’F— you’ to us, or maybe he really likes the song. Either way, it was pretty amazing to have a guy like Prince covering one of our songs — and actually doing it better than we did.” Regardless of the intent, Hawkins says the band was thrilled that Prince decided to play the song on one of the biggest stages in the world.

And Prince didn't stop there. His set opened with a rocked up version of the Queen classic, "We Will Rock You" and later worked in such rock standards as Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary." Adding to the awesomeness of the show, Prince performed in a driving rainstorm, which only enhanced the production value of the set closer "Purple Rain."
