Cure for cancer? Nah, scientists have better things to research, like passing gas. Your body is going to get those foul odors out one way or another.

Professor in Nutrition and Dietetics Clare Collins from the University of Newcastle published a study that has some bad news for those who like to hold their farts in. If you hold them in, your body will just eventually release it through your mouth.

"Trying to hold it in leads to a build up of pressure and major discomfort," Collins says. "A build up of intestinal gas can trigger abdominal distension, with some gas reabsorbed into the circulation and exhaled in your breath."

As you could have guessed, when that built-up gas comes out of your mouth, it will smell like you have terrible breath. What's the fix? Just let 'em rip.

Collins says that the next time you feel a fart coming on, you should "move to a more convenient location" and let it go. It's the best thing you can do for your digestive health.
