Cinemark, owners of the Rave Cinemas at 53rd Street and Interstate 74 in Davenport, are instituting a new bag policy effective Thursday February 22nd. According to the Cinemark website "Any bags or packages measuring larger than 12" x 12" x 6" will not be permitted into the theatre."

The policy is similar to one many universities have adopted for major sporting events. The Iowa Hawkeyes policy for Kinnick stadium only allows items that will fit in a clear plastic or vinyl bag 12" x 6" x 12". The NFL has a similar policy in place league wide. According to an article posted to athleticbusiness.com:

"Bags brought to athletics events present a list of safety and security concerns ranging from mere nuisance to terrorism — fans may sneak in food, alcohol, noisemakers, weapons or other prohibited items — and checking each individual bag represents a substantial commitment of manpower, time, access control technology, or perhaps all three."

Cinemark's website doesn't specify what exactly the theater chain is trying to prevent from being brought into their cinemas, but I suspect the laundry list is similar to what sports teams are trying to prevent. One thing is for sure, the days of using mom's gigantic purse to sneak in movie candy bought at the drugstore seem to be over.
