Gretchen Wieners' mane may remain steeped in secrecy, but the truth behind "Becky with the good hair," a lyric from Beyonce's "Sorry," is no longer such a mystery.

Since the song's May release, fans have speculated that the line is veiled reference to a woman with whom Beyonce's husband, Jay Z, had an affair. The Beyhive had a field day naming suspects (everyone from Rachel Roy to Rita Ora were thrust under a microscope). But the song's writer, Wynter Gordon, has moved to silence the noise, and told Entertainment Weekly she never meant for any one person to be targeted.

"I laughed, like this is so silly. Where are we living?" she said. "I was like, “What day in age from that lyric do you get all of this information?” Is it really telling you all that much, accusing people?"

Gordon said she and Bey tried not to discuss the "Becky" hysteria once the witch hunt began, but added she did find it amusing. And while the song certainly began as Gordon's, she noted Bey instantly connected with it upon listening, and made it her own.

"When I played it for her, I was like, 'This is one of my favorite songs,'" Gordon said. "She was like, 'This is my life.' I told her, 'You know what, take it, do what you want with it.' She went and re-produced it, she changed some words, added the bridge, it’s hers."
