See All 100 New Herky Statues Debuted Across The State of Iowa

The streets of Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, University Heights, Tiffin, and Solon will look different starting Wednesday, May 1st when 100 statues of Herky On Parade will be unveiled, and you can see each and every one of them below.

This is the third installment of what has become the largest public art participatory event in Iowa. Originally established in 2004 and replicated in 2014, Herky On Parade showcases local and regional artists creativity with the venerable Herky the Hawk as the canvas. More than 260 potential designs were submitted from 150 different artists. The plaster statues stand 6 feet tall and are affixed to a concrete base.

Two teachers from Davenport West High School - Dave Schaeffer and Brian White - created two of the statues. Mr. Schaeffer created what he dubbed "Herktimus Prime."

Mr. White created a tribute to Boy Scouts.

“Nothing epitomizes community collaboration better than Herky On Parade,” said Josh Schamberger, President of Think Iowa City, the organizer of Herky On Parade. “From collaboration from the University of Iowa and the athletics department, to streets staff from each of the cities and county, to businesses and organizations generously sponsoring, to the artistic community for overwhelming us with creative designs which all leads to the end result which is thousands of community members and visitors spending their summer visiting each Herky statue.”

The original plan was to unveil 75 statues for Herky's 75th Birthday, but an abundance of designs and sponsor interest brought the number up to 100. Sponsors stepped up and purchased half of the statues already, and those not purchased will go to a live auction in September with proceeds benefiting art programs within the Iowa City Community School District and Clear Creek Amana School District.
